Hoops 4 Health: Celebrating the success of First Nations' people
Timmy Duggan | Owner/Operator Hoops 4 Health
When we met with Timmy Duggan who heads up Hoops 4 Health he was extremely impressed with the work Community First Development does in partnership with community, with mob, and he couldn’t help by reacting with this response ‘’this sounds too good to be true!”
Hoops 4 Health has been operating since 2001 and is led by Timmy Duggan, NT’s first National Basketball League player! It is an Indigenous owned and operated community enterprise with a vision to provide an early intervention model to support young people in the Northern Territory. Hoops 4 Health uses basketball as a vehicle to promote health and wellbeing, with a focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people.
How does it work?
Hoops 4 Health combines the power of physical movement and skills development with mental health exercises to build personal confidence and pathways for participants. The organisation uses basketball to change the direction of young people's lives. The program operates in youth justice centres and remote communities.
Hoops 4 Health incorporates a ‘calmness on the court’ approach, helping young people to take control of their decision making, starting with interactions on the basketball court. Program leaders use mental imagery, yarning and calmness circles to lead post-game reflections on individual behaviour and team performance. Driven by evidence and their consumers, they offer consumer focused social and emotional wellbeing (SEWB) programs targeted at a variety of audiences. The fundamental philosophy of Hoops 4 Health is to always celebrate the success of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
We are currently working with Hoops 4 Health to explore funding opportunities for growth. We are very excited to be a small part in their growing success.
